Generator safety. Run portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet (6 m) from the house and other buildings, exhaust pointed away from doors, windows and vents. Never run one in a home, garage (even with the door open), basement, crawlspace, shed, porch or carport. Working CO alarms belong on every level and outside sleeping areas; test monthly. A CO shut-off feature does not make indoor operation safe.

Licensed work. Hire a licensed electrician for house wiring, transfer switches, interlocks and inlet boxes. Permits may be required. Never backfeed a wall, dryer or range outlet. Gas and structural work require the appropriate licensed trade. Follow local codes, equipment instructions, and local fire code and container labels for fuel storage.

Medical equipment. Make any powered-medical-equipment backup plan with the device supplier and your clinician. In an emergency, call 911.
